Born in 1898 in Lawnton, legendary American artist Alexander Calder began his career as an engineer. But soon art won him over, his father was a sculptor and his mum was a painter. At the age of 28 Calder moved to Paris to begin his new career. Drawn to both art and technology Calder developed a unique individual style of sculpture. His often large-scale pieces are painted in cheery primary colours.
